Once-stalwart financial institutions have gone out of business; governments have pumped hundreds of billions into rescue plans; untold numbers have lost their jobs or homes. It is a dark time indeed. How do we get out of this mess? Bailouts and crisis management are not enough. We need to get to the root cause of the crisis. And the lynchpin issue that underlies all others is the lack of twenty-first century leadership that can meet the unprecedented challenges of our time.

Of times like these the late economist and philosopher Kenneth Boulding said, ?The greatest need for leadership is in the dark. It is when the system is changing so rapidly ... that old prescriptions and old wisdoms can only lead to catastrophe and leadership is necessary to call people to the very strangeness of the new world being born.?

The old leadership model is bankrupt. Leadership is in crisis?from business to government, leaders have lost their compass in the rough seas of bad debt, a borderless economy, ubiquitous media, the Internet, and turbulent markets. A new landscape makes leading more complex than ever. Even the 20th century?s greatest heroes would likely have a hard time leading in the 21st. President Franklin D. Roosevelt?s debilitating polio would be all over the Internet. John F. Kennedy?s chronic affairs would haunt him while he would face not one but multiple enemies. And Winston Churchill would be all over YouTube for his ?battle with the bottle.?

But the crisis also affords us the opportunity to reinvent the paradigm and practice of leadership. How can you lead now? And how do you breed principled leaders for the 21st century? Is leadership a matter of DNA, culture, or coaching?

Since 1984 Dr. Zweifel has coached hundreds of leaders in Fortune 500 companies, governments, non-governmental organizations, and small and medium enterprises to meet bold objectives in turbulent markets. Living in Europe, Japan, India and the United States, he has helped clients implement large-scale transformations, build virtual high-performance teams, and cause breakthrough results.

Since 2000, Professor Zweifel has taught leadership and cross-cultural management at Columbia University in New York, St. Gallen Business School in Switzerland, and at other universities in the United States, Europe, Israel and Australia.

Dr. Zweifel is the author of five acclaimed books, including Communicate or Die: Getting Results Through Speaking and Listening; Culture Clash: Managing the Global High-Performance Team; and The Rabbi and the CEO: The Ten Commandments for 21st Century Leaders.

In his speeches to business leaders, UN bodies, government agencies like the US State Department, and the US Military Academy at West Point, he acts as a multi-disciplinary "ambassador of worlds and wisdoms," integrating tradition and future, East and West, theory and practice, business and making a difference. His speaking and teaching empower managers of all stripes to go beyond themselves, turn breakdowns into breakthroughs, and be the leaders needed in the 21st century.
