Tannenbaum's Ph.D. is in Communication with a minor in Social Psychology and her career is focused on how groups are influenced by speakers. Her research interests include how power is achieved via persuasiveness.

Often a one-day seminar is the most effective way to introduce many people in an organization to the principles of effective communications. One-day seminars are typically split into two segments: morning and afternoon. The morning segment includes a lecture portion and practice speeches by a small number of participants in front of the group. The lecture portion can be attended by as many people as the client facility can accommodate. Up to six people can be accommodated in the small group practice and individual feedback sessions.

The lecture portion is tailored to the requirements of each audience. Typical elements include:

  1. Improving your speaking technique
  2. The importance of delivery: non-verbal, vocal and content elements of message
  3. Speaking Persuasively
    • Logos - appeals to logic and facts
      Ethos - appeals to credibility
      Pathos - appeals to emotions

    Handling Questions and Answers

During the practice speeches, speakers receive immediate feedback from the seminar leader and from the other members of the group. The practice speeches and feedback are videotaped. The afternoon is used for 30-minute private videotape review sessions with each of the speakers from the morning. This accomplishes a number of significant objectives:

First, the most effective way to improve communication skills is via immediate feedback.

Second, the feedback is often personal, and sometimes intimidating. By providing private, supportive feedback, the participant gains tools to improve, rather than criticism.

Third, a plan for personal improvement can be established. Since no two people communicate in the same way, there is no one prescription for improvement. The best way to achieve improvement is to engage each individual in a process that is tailored specifically to his or her needs.

Multi-day training programs to accommodate additional people in the small group and individual feedback sessions are available.
