Claudia Kemfert
Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert has been the head of the department of energy, transportation and environment at the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin (DIW Berlin) and professor for environmental economics at Humboldt University Berlin since April 2004. Her research focuses on the economic assessment of climate and energy policy strategies.
As a member of the High Level Group on Energy, Claudia Kemfert advises EU President José Manuel Barroso. She is also an external expert advising the World Bank and the United Nations, and a reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC).
She is a DAAD laureate and was awarded the prize "Elf der Wissenschaft" (top eleven young scientists in Germany) by the German Science Foundation (DFG) and the Helmholtz- and the Leibniz- Foundation in 2006. Claudia Kemfert is a member of the scientific commission of Lower Saxony, and of the sustainability advisory boards in Brandenburg and Baden-Württemberg.
In addition to this, she is a member of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) and the Energy Institute at the University of Linz as well as co-publisher of the journals Energy Economics, Gaia und Energy Efficiency.
Claudia Kemfert was born in Delmenhorst on 17.12.1968. She studied economics at the universities of Bielefeld and Oldenburg and obtained her doctoral degree at Stanford in 1998. She was then invited on a research assignment to the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) in Milan (1998). Between January 1999 and April 2000 was the head of research group at the Institute for Rational Energy Use at the University of Stuttgart; and began teaching at the Universities of St. Petersburg, Moscow and Sienna.
From 2000 to 2004 Claudia Kemfert was assistant professor at the University of Oldenburg, where she headed a team of researchers. Subsequently she became the first assistant professor in Germany to receive a full time professorship. She is the head of various research projects dealing with energy and environmental political strategies and an avid networker, for example as a member of the Energy Modeling Forum (EMF) at Stanford University. Claudia Kemfert has published numerous scientific reports. She is also the author of a book, her texts and studies have been published numerous popular scientific media and she is often invited as an expert in interviews on television and the radio.
