Clayton Barbeau
Clayton C. Barbeau, M.A., M.F.C.T., has been called "the poet of mental health," and was recently introduced to an international audience as one of the most effective speakers in the world. His statement, "Where you place your time you place your life and where you place your life you place your love" was the thematic center of his Creating Family series which has helped an uncounted number of families who saw it on one of the 54 PBS television stations in the US, or any of the Canadian or Australian audiences who have been privileged to see it. Physicians have prescribed his Coping series to their patients. His Surviving with Style series is in constant use by various support groups, prison groups and individuals throughout the country. Family support agencies, parishes and congregations, libraries, counseling centers and self help groups report that Clayton Barbeau's video and audio tapes are in constant demand.
Born in Sacramento, California, Clayton was a combat infantryman in the Korean war and graduated with honors from the University of Santa Clara. Married for 26 years, he is the father of eight children; he was widowed in 1979. After 10 years as a single parent, he married Maureen. He holds a Master's Degree in Psychology and is a licensed Marriage, Family and Child Therapist with a full private practice in San Francisco. His comprehensive life experiences give him a refreshing freedom from psychological jargon and dogma, and help to inform his insights with great good humor.
His audio and video lecture series includes: Creating Family - Intimacy, Love, and Sex; Coping; Intimacy: the Loving Connection; How to Raise Parents; The Whole You, a Self Therapy Approach; The Art of Loving; Patterns of Relating and Surviving.
Clayton's books on family and counseling include: Father of the Family, Joy of Marriage, Delivering the Male, How to Raise Parents. He also won the Phelan Award for Literary Excellence for his novel, The Ikon, based on his Korean combat experience. He is currently working on his a biographical novel of Dante: The Long Journey.
A dynamic, inspirational speaker, he has lectured throughout the U.S. as well as in Mexico, Canada, England, Holland, Germany, Australia, Panama, Guatamala, New Zealand, Singapore, El Salvador, Malaysia, India, Bahrain, South Africa, Mauritius, Kenya, Turkey, Switzerland, Barbados, Hong Kong, Thailand, Pakistan, and Greece. His international audience includes physical and mental health professionals, educators, corporate groups, government agencies, religious groups, married couples and youth organizations, as well as the general public.
