Anil Kapoor (born 24 December 1959 in Mumbai, India) is long considered to be one of the most respected and prolific movie stars in India. In a career spanning over 30 years, he has acted in over 100 films, many which have been resounding hits at the box office.

He began his career as an actor at the age of 20 and first won acclaim for his roles in the drama Mashaal (1984) for which he won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award (India's equivalent to the Oscars) and Shekhar Kapur's sci-fi film Mr. India (1987) which remains one of the biggest hits of Indian cinema to date.

After a series of successful films, Kapoor earned his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in Tezaab in 1988, and later for Beta in 1992. Since the 90's, Mr. Kapoor is widely acknowledged as the biggest film star of his time, frequently referred to in the press as the 'Tom Cruise' of India. Since then, he has starred in a number of critical and commercial successes, including Virasat, for which he won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance; Biwi No.1 (1999); Taal (1999), for which he won his second Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award; Pukar (2000), for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor.

But it was his performance in the critically acclaimed global hit Slumdog Millionaire, that left critics and audiences alike buzzing. The award winning sleeper hit, made on shoe-string budget of 13 million dollars, went on to win every major award it was nominated for including the highly respected National Board of Review, BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Picture, finally sweeping award season by winning eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and Original Score. Directed by British director Danny Boyle, 'the little film that could' proved to be Mr. Boyle's pièce de résistance, winning accolades and recognition along with a world-wide box office that at last tally was nearly a billion dollars. It was that film that introduced international audiences to Mr. Kapoor and launched what looks to be a long-lasting Hollywood career. Currently starring in the eighth season of the award-winning action series 24, Mr. Kapoor's performance has been singled out by top industry critics as "Excellent. Kapoor owns every scene he is in" (The Hollywood Reporter). His work on '24' has generated not only glowing reviews from international press but also strong Emmy buzz from studio heads and industry insiders.

Internationally, he is the most recognized Hindi film actor today.

Anil Kapoor was born in Mumbai, to a film producer Surinder Kapoor and his wife Nirmal. His elder brother, Boney Kapoor, is a successful producer while younger brother Sanjay Kapoor is also a well-known actor.

In 1984, he married Sunita Kapoor (née Bhambhani) and has two daughters and a son. Kapoor's elder daughter is the actress Sonam Kapoor who made her debut in Saawariya in 2007 and then starred in Delhi 6 and is presently acting in two under-production films. Anil Kapoor's second daughter Rhea is presently producing her first film after having attended school in New York and his youngest Harsh is in California attending Chapman University.
