Biography: Earvin "Magic" Johnson may be best known for his winning ways during his illustrious 13-year National Basketball Association (NBA) career, but today the basketball legend is CEO of his own business, Magic Johnson Enterprises (MJE). The Earvin "Magic" Johnson philosophy is that all business ventures must have a redeeming social value. He is champion of the often neglected minority. Thus, Johnson Development Corporation, a subsidiary of MJE, has devoted its efforts toward revitalizing urban shopping centers by bringing employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth for future economic investment. Johnson's ventures include Magic Johnson Theaters, which began in 1994 when Johnson Development Corporation formed a partnership with the then Sony Entertainment motion picture exhibition group. A subsequent merger created Loew's Cineplex Entertainment, the company that is currently partnered with Johnson Development Corporation. The mission of this partnership is to operate first-run multiplex theaters in under-served communities throughout the United States. In addition to providing an excellent theatrical entertainment experience, the theaters serve as a business stimulus fostering local economic growth, job development and financial empowerment in the communities they serve. Magic Johnson has also developed several Starbucks franchises in urban locations. His name also graces numerous TGI Friday's franchises as well as 24 Hour Fitness Magic Johnson Sport franchises, the flagship of which is in the Sherman Oaks Galleria. Magic Johnson has also started a private lending bank that specializes in giving micro loans to urban start-ups. He also owns a part of the Dayton Dragons, a very successful Minor League baseball team. Earvin "Magic" Johnson is an impressive man. He lights up the room with his smile and people gravitate toward his dynamic personality. Admired for his many unparalleled basketball achievements, Magic Johnson is one of the greatest NBA legends of all times. During his 13-year NBA career, Johnson helped revolutionize the game. At 6-9, Johnson was the tallest point guard in league history. Magic won 5 NBA titles with the Lakers, he was a 3-time league MVP and 3-time Finals MVP. Johnson was a 12-time All-Star in his career. Johnson was also a member of the gold-medal "Dream Team" at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Helping capture a state high school championship, he began his winning basketball ways in Lancing, Michigan for Everett High School in 1977. In 1979, he helped capture an NCAA title while at Michigan State. Moreover, Johnson has proved that there is life after professional basketball. Those who have followed his accomplishments have seen that this man has a purpose in life, a legacy, and an enthusiasm for living to share with those around him. Social responsibility means giving back to the community. As important as creating a business legacy is Johnson's legacy of charitable and community activities. In 1991, he founded the Magic Johnson Foundation, a non-profit organization which directs its efforts toward the health, educational and social needs of inner city youth. He is involved with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Starlight Foundation, American Heart Association and the Urban League. He has helped raise over $10 million for the United College Fund with the "A Midsummer Night's Magic" weekend charity event. Beyond his charisma, popular appeal and high visibility worldwide, Earvin Magic Johnson is a man dedicated to making society a better place in which to live.
