Biography: Al Franken is an Emmy Award-winning television writer and producer, New York Times best-selling author, Grammy Award-winning comedian, and now host of the flagship program of Air America, "The Al Franken Show". On June 27, 2005, he received the New York Festival's 23rd Annual International Radio Programming and Promotions "World Achievement Award For Breakthrough Radio" for his unique perspective and commentary on his daily radio show. Al Franken's career has spanned all areas of the media, from stand-up commedy to TV, film, books, radio and public speaking. He is likely best known for his work on "Saturday Night Live" where he was part of the original writing staff that created the groundbreaking late night show. Beginning with "Saturday Night Live" in 1975, he remained with the original show until 1980 and then returned in 1985 to stay for another 10 years, leaving after the 1994-1995 season. He received four Emmys for his writing on SNL, and a fifth for producing. It was here that he developed one of the "Saturday Night Live" Hall of Fame characters, the self help guru, Stuart Smalley. His first book, "I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough, and Doggone It, People Like Me", used Stuart Smalley as its subject and provided the basis for the 1995 movie, "Stuart Saves His Family" which he wrote and in which he also starred. Franken's sixth and latest book "The Truth (With Jokes)" reached the bookstores in October 2005 and is on the New York Times Bestsellers List. It follows the best-selling "Lies and The Lying Liars Who Tell Them". Franken's second book, "Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot, And Other Observations" reached The New York Times Best Seller List in its first week and remained there for eight months. He has also written "Why Not Me: The Inside Story of the Making and Unmaking of the Franken Presidency" and "Oh The Things I Know! A Guide to Success, or Failing That, Happiness" Franken was the co-writer of the Touchtone Pictures 1994 movie, "When A Man Loves A Woman" starring Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan. Al Franken is well known for his work as a political satirist. He has performed at the 1994 and 1996 White House Correspondents Dinner. In 1988 he provided commentary for CNN at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. In 1992 he anchored Comedy Central's "Indecision '92" winning wide critical acclaim for his coverage of both conventions and election night. In 1996, teamed with Arianna Huffington, he again covered both party conventions and election night for "Politically Incorrect".
