Valorie Burton is the author of Rich Minds, Rich Rewards and Listen to Your
Life, both published by divisions of Random House, Inc. Her third book, What's
Really Holding You Back?, was released in March 2005. A sought-after life
coach and speaker, Ms. Burton is a frequent media contributor who has engaged
in over 300 radio, print and television interviews, appearing on CNN, The 700
Club, ABC Family, UPN, TBN, BET, Life Today, in Essence, Black Enterprise,
InStyle Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, USA (Today) Weekend, the Dallas
Morning News and on local affiliates of NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, WB, PBS and NPR.
She is the lifestyle columnist for BlackAmericaWeb.com, a news and information
site with over 700,000 members founded by radio veteran Tom Joyner. Her weekly
coaching program, The Life Enrichment Challenge, helps visitors transform their
lives one week at a time. She previously served as a monthly columnist and
contributing editor for Heart & Soul Magazine and as co-host and co-producer
of the national television program, The Potter's Touch with T.D. Jakes, which
airs weekdays on TBN.
In 1996, Ms. Burton founded Dallas public relations firm The Burton Agency, a
business she sold in 2001. She was named one of the nation's 30 rising stars
in public relations by PR Week Magazine in 2000.
She was appointed by Governor Rick Perry (Texas) to the Governor's Commission
for Women and served a two-year term (2001 - 2003). She is a former Miss Black
Texas USA, Miss Black USA "top 10" finalist and a runner-up to Miss Texas. She
is creator of the annual Texas Trailblazer Award luncheon, which has raised
nearly $300,000 for domestic violence programs and honors women who have blazed
trails in business and the community. She served four years on the Board of
Directors of The Family Place, one of the nation's largest domestic violence
shelters, and served on the Boards of Directors for Girls Incorporated
(formerly Girls Club) and St. Philip's School. A former columnist for the
Dallas Business Journal and Minority Business News USA, she is a member of the
International Coach Federation, the International Association of Coaches and
the National Association of Black Journalists.
At age 21, she earned a master's degree in journalism with an emphasis in
broadcasting from Florida A&M University. She graduated from Florida State
University with a bachelor's degree in International Affairs. Ms. Burton and
her husband live in the Washington, D.C. area.
