Biography: Ryan Correy is no ordinary 23 year old, accomplishing more in his teen years than most accomplish in a lifetime. Most recently, he was awarded the 2006 "Outstanding Young Canadian" award by JCI Canada, for his contributions to the community. His accomplishments, at any age, are extraordinary. Discovering a passion for cycling at the age of 13 when introduced to the sport by his father, the two rode across Canada and throughout the United States together on several journeys. In 2002, Ryan cycled 14,000 km around North America to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research, raising $14,000 for the cause. His next expedition took him from Alaska to Argentina, cycling the length of the Pan American Highway. The 25,000 km long journey took him 131 days to complete - surpassing a Guinness World Record by nine days, but he opted not to submit his accomplishment for publication. Ryan's dream is "to use these journeys as a tool to educate, entertain and inspire the world." His latest excursion has taken him to Baffin Island in the Arctic Circle. He is among 6 participants from the Duke of Edinburgh's Award spending time in Iqaluit and the hamlet of Pangnirtung, taking part in a variety of cultural experiences and hiking over the high arctic tundra in Auyuittuq National Park. Back at home in Calgary, Ryan is working towards completing a degree in Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership at Mount Royal College. Outside of class, Ryan focuses on supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Alberta. This charity grants the wishes of children with life threatening illnesses. He has raised $26,000 so far and continues to fundraise through his presentations to schools and non-profit groups. In June 2007, Ryan will compete in the "Race Across America" - considered the toughest race in the world by Outside Magazine. A documentary on this ambitious endeavor is currently in the pre-production stages (produced by White Iron Pictures). Ryan's first book will be published around the same time that the film is released. |
