Biography:

Award-winning journalist Linda Jones is author of Nappyisms: Affirmations for Nappy-Headed People and Wannabes!, a humor-based collection of anecdotes and essays, jokes, affirmations and other writings that address the sensitive issue of hair in the African American community. Hair is the device Ms. Jones uses to educate others about cultural diversity.

Ms. Jones is also founder of A Nappy Hair Affair, Inc. (ANHA), which promotes African American culture and identity and is president of ManeLock Communications, which provides professional writing services. She has appeared in cities such as Detroit, Washington, D.C., Toronto, Ontario; Atlanta, Dallas, Cleveland, Nashville, Miami and New York, and has lectured and performed at the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute at Vanderbilt University, at Prince Georges Community College in MD, at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, VA, at the Toronto Hair, Health and Beauty Conference, and at the World Natural Hair Conference in Atlanta.

Linda's organization and book have generated national media attention, including articles in the Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, the Washington Post and the Dallas Morning News. She was also featured on National Public Radio on the popular Tavis Smiley Show, and an essay from her book is now featured in the recently released Chicken Soup for the African American Woman's Soul.

Ms. Jones is available to speak at colleges, universities, churches, community organizations and other events. Her lectures and workshops that get to the "root" of issues of self-esteem and self-appreciation have been well received.

Programs:

A particularly exciting lecture Ms. Jones delivers, involving her work as a journalist while traveling in South Africa and covering the historic non-racial elections as a reporter for the Dallas Morning News. In an audio/visual presentation, she shows images of victims of bombings on the days leading up to the election and shares sounds of the people rejoicing when Nelson Mandela's, African National Congress party won the vote. This presentation would be particularly suitable for sharing during Black History Month activities.
