Dr. Tannenbaum is president of Dynamic Communication and Senior Lecturer in the
Department of Theatre, Speech & Dance at Brown University.
Keynotes:
Barbara Tannenbaum is a highly energetic and sought-after keynote speaker. Her
empowering speeches include both academic foundations of persuasive
communications and entertaining stories about how the tools of effective
presentation are employed. By using her own presentation as example, the ways
to achieve successful communication are illustrated. Her keynotes are
frequently rated at the highest levels in attendee surveys.
After a series of successful keynotes for the American Bar Association's
Council of Chief Judges, Barbara was named to their Speakers Hall of Fame. She
regularly speaks for leading financial, technology and legal clients, including
Lehman Brothers, Yahoo! and National Association of Appellate Court Attorneys
and the National Association of Women Lawyers. She is a regular guest lecturer
at Wellesley College and Princeton University.
Coaching:
Leading speakers frequently benefit from coaching in advance of important
presentations. Barbara Tannenbaum coaches senior executives and politicians
(including U.S. Representatives, Senators and Governors) to hone their skills
and prepare for important speeches. With her academic background in persuasion
and public speaking, Barbara helps clients refine both their message and their
delivery. Coaching has the most impact when it is regular. Dr. Tannenbaum
coaches a limited number of clients on a retained basis.
Consulting:
Many executives recognize that there are specific aspects of their
communications skills that, if improved, would unlock even more potential in
their careers. Barbara Tannenbaum has worked with senior executives in finance,
law, healthcare, politics and industry for almost twenty years to teach them
how to take up space and communicate with power to maximize the effectiveness
of their communications.
Barbara combines lectures in the classical elements of persuasion with
interactive learning via practice presentations. Presentations are often
videotaped for individual review and feedback sessions, allowing for personal
coaching which is highly effective.
Often a one-day seminar is the most effective way to introduce many people in
an organization to the principles of effective communications. One-day seminars
are typically split into two segments: morning and afternoon.
The morning segment includes a lecture portion and practice speeches by a small
number of participants in front of the group. The lecture portion can be
attended by as many people as the client facility can accommodate. Up to six
people can be accommodated in the small group practice and individual feedback
sessions.
The lecture portion is tailored to the requirements of each audience. Typical
elements include:
I. Improving your speaking technique
II. The importance of delivery: non-verbal, vocal and content elements of
message
III. Speaking Persuasively
A. Logos - appeals to logic and facts
B. Ethos - appeals to credibility
C. Pathos - appeals to emotions
IV. Handling Questions and Answers
During the practice speeches, speakers receive immediate feedback from the
seminar leader and from the other members of the group. The practice speeches
and feedback are videotaped.
The afternoon is used for 30-minute private videotape review sessions with each
of the speakers from the morning. This accomplishes a number of significant
objectives:
First, the most effective way to improve communication skills is via immediate
feedback.
Second, the feedback is often personal, and sometimes intimidating. By
providing private, supportive feedback, the participant gains tools to improve,
rather than criticism.
Third, a plan for personal improvement can be established. Since no two people
communicate in the same way, there is no one prescription for improvement. The
best way to achieve improvement is to engage each individual in a process that
is tailored specifically to his or her needs.
Multi-day training programs to accommodate additional people in the small group
and individual feedback sessions are available.
